We are full to the brim, so we haven't taken in any new equines large or small, of late. This year has been a hard one, and we have just purchased another $3,500 worth of grass hay (donated by us the Bischofs), to get our herd through.

ABOUT US
The Winged Horse Equine Welfare Inc is a not-for-profit, registered charity with DGR status that is currently based in Portarlington, on the Bellarine Peninsula, in Victoria, Australia. Our mission and purpose is to take in unwanted, neglected, abused and/or slaughter-bound horses and other animals to rehabilitate, support and eventually find each sentient their perfect forever home, where possible. While nurturing those in our care we also aim to educate the wider community about issues related to animal welfare, rescuing and rehabilitating at risk horses and how people can help our efforts. TWHEW has been running for 6 years after taking ownership of an 80 acre property on the outskirts of Portarlington which had previously been used as a racehorse training facility. Our approach is to use environmentally friendly methods and holistic practices where possible, when looking after those in our care.
We currently have 35 equines in care and, despite horses being our primary rescue, we open our gates to other critters in need, namely; 14 alpacas, 12 sheep/lambs, lots of chickens/roosters, 2 guinea fowl, 6 goats and 3 pigs!
Help Needed: You will no doubt appreciate the cost of all of our rescuing and rehabilitation care. We are currently struggling to pay vet, feed and other bills, as we are purely funded through donations and animal sponsorship. To find out how you can help, head to our Donate today page. How we Started: The Tao of Jeparit Justice

I’ve met Women of Truth – Of Noble Heart – Gayle, Jodi, Tania and Zoe – There from the start
Modern day warriors – Simply waiting to give – Jeparit ponies – A new chance to live
Of 280 ponies – All with life in their eyes – Their fate wrongly sealed – By DPI lies
Their ‘expert’ – A retired, small animal vet – Used ‘deteriorating condition’ – To cast a deceptive net
Though photos show different – “Condition score 1 1/2″ – Spewed across radio – Please, don’t make me laugh
I walked amongst – This massive herd – 98% could be saved – Any less? Absurd!
I saw proud stallions – “Tao” was one – A black and white pinto – With many a son
Though wild and free – He let me stand – As he munched on hay – Content on His land
There’s photos of him – Not a rib in sight – A rounded rump – A stallion of might
A gentle boy – Serene with his mares – Peaceful, balanced and calm – With simple horse cares
Then DPI came – With their hired gun – And made these ponies – Flee and run
I was there – Heard Gayle and Jodi’s plea – To a very Bad man – Reason to see
But this man – Grey beard and cold heart – Would not budge – The slaughter would start
He could not answer – Why healthy horses must die – As he hid his name badge – Subtle, but not worth the try
Case worker was there – Well over her head – Silenced by bosses – Her eyes filled with dread
Our hearts are broken – No one high enough would hear – The police would not – Let media near
So all we could do – Was watch, film and cry – As the Beings we knew – Began to be hunted and die
Four horsemen, two youth – Ran them all day – Tag teamed with the ute – Baited with hay
Heavily pregnant girls – Not openly reported – Were found shot incorrectly – Their foals partly aborted
Desperate to see – They didn’t die in vain – We traversed killing fields – To gather evidence insane
Multiple head shots – One in the neck – Do DPI know – Of the lives they have wrecked?
Many showed signs – Of struggling in sand – The blood spattered soils – Which was once Their Land
And burnt in my heart – The look of fear – As I photographed the pinto girl – And discovered her tear
Shot in the head – Heavy with foal – The shooter had failed – To hit his goal
Tears are sacred – As are these souls – DPI had no right – What were their goals?
To sell kilogram of horse meat – Make blood and bone? – Instead of allowing – For them to all roam
And how ironic – A nearly blind foal – Survived the 4 days – Alone, a small soul
We found her while driving – The long boundary fence – Grazing quietly – Amongst shrubs that were dense
I’d tried to save her – Numerous times – But her blindness excluded her – by DPI lines
Here was her chance – The last pony alive – Would she lay low – Have a chance to thrive?
Sadly the four horsemen (Apocalypse) – Found her – She followed her ‘kin’ – To the killing yard – The place of sin
The owner had – Screamed and yelled abuse – At these ‘horsemen’ – I use the term loose
The last I saw – Of ‘my’ little brown one – Was her body atop meat truck – Blood glistening in the sun
How incredibly sad – One with poor eyes – Had the best sight – Amongst those who caused her demise
I wonder if these horsemen – While riding behind – Even had a prick of conscience – Anything to remind?
I hope that little foal – Visits them at night – Teaches them how cruel – And narrow was their sight
Indeed, there are none so blind – As those who will not see – May Truth come out – And DPI be accountable to thee
But now is the Wave – Led by Tania, Jodi and those keen – To uncover Truth – All that is Unseen
We have 97 Spirit ponies – Plus their unborn foals – To Honor, to give Voice – To achieve higher goals
Accountability – Will find you DPI – We will not rest – We will not lie
Gentle Warriors – Armed with the Truth – Building momentum – Providing the Proof.
